Wake in Moonlight
For V. S. N.

When in middle of night
I suddenly wake in moonlight,
Don’t know who I am
Until we move closer in bed—
Touch you and remember my name.

I gaze at length of your body,
Count pulse of ocean waves
Swimming inside of your skin,
Move closer as you lay there breathing,
Trace the Moon that rests on your cheek.

Sometimes I’m amazed that you’re here,
Where others never could live,
Watch you breathe in my air,
Flutter of pearls in your eyes.
Are you awake or just dreaming?

Each night as we lie close in sleep,
You leave me on shore of waking joy,
My Moon-lit shadow brushing your lips,
Knowing I’m helpless beside you,
Your heart warm within my heart.
